Student Research

For colleges in Canada that offer AHT/VT Programs see AHT/VT Programs.

To research the accreditation levels and their meaning see AHT/VT Programs: CVMA Accreditation.

You may inquire to the program of your choice for more information regarding cost, prerequisites, etc. If education at a formal program is not possible, there are colleges in Canada that offer distance education programs for AHT/VT’s. There are also American Veterinary Medical Association Accredited distance education programs. The AVMA website (www.avma.org) will include more information. You should inquire of the provincial association where you intend to practice, to ensure that any program you do take will be recognized for membership.

Information regarding the veterinary profession is found on the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association’s web site, www.animalhealthcare.ca.

National Survey including wages

A national survey of the CAAHTT members was released in 2003. Below is a brief summary of annual income reported in the analysis.

Of the respondents, report on their annual income:
22% < $20,000.00
43% ~ $20,000.00 - $ 29,000.00
21% ~ $30,000.00 - $ 39,000.00
14% > $ 39,000.00

AHT/VT’s working as clinic managers, educators, industry or government institutions (research, laboratories) are generally indicative of higher wages.

AHT/VT’s in Canada are making on average $14.50 per hour with starting wage (commiserate on experience) of $12.00 and up.

Employment outlook for graduates of a formal course of study continues to be very bright. Your research into the Animal Health Technology / Veterinary Technician career should include where you wish to find employment. It is helpful to have the ability to move to where jobs are available.
