Inquiry - WORKING IN CANADA
- Veterinarians

1. Animal Health Technology/Technician and Veterinary Technology/Technician are the same. View the National Occupation Classification (NOC) Profession #3213 by Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC) at: www.hrdc-drhc.gc.ca or www.worklogic.com:81/noc/NOCView.htm

2. The qualification of a veterinarian is difficult to accept as an AHT/RVT/VT. It is suggested that a person pursuing a career in Canada as a technician attend a recognized college program.

3. Contact the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) (www.canadianveterinarians.net) regarding the National Examining Board (NEB) Examination. The CVMA does recognize degrees from veterinary schools outside Canada. The Canadian and American VMA's share a list of more than 300 overseas colleges of veterinary medicine that are recognized for the purpose of allowing graduates to become candidates for the NEB Examination.

4. CAAHTT does not govern or register/license technicians. In Canada, legislative authority to regulate the practice of professions and trades is a provincial responsibility. Each provincial association regulates its own membership and is compulsory in some provinces. All use a national exam (Veterinary Technician National Exam VTNE), and require graduation from an approved program that trains technicians as part of the registration criteria. Please contact the individual Provincial AHT/VT Associations to inquire if they recognize foreign DVM diplomas.

The Canadian Information Center for International Credentials: www.cicic.ca/professions/3213en.asp is also recommended as a source for information.

The AHT/RVT/VT in Canada is to be up to date on many tasks. Anesthesia, radiology, laboratory, pharmacy technology are just some of the many duties that require adaptation and change as technology advances are made. Technicians that work in the field of laboratory medicine attend the same program as clinical technicians. The provinces of Quebec (French speaking) and Ontario have many laboratory technicians. Technicians are employable in many different areas, veterinary clinics, zoos, feedlots, laboratories etc. The average wage range starts at approximately $12.00/hr.

Hopefully this information will assist you. Best wishes and good luck!!
